Seoul Issues First Heat Wave Alert of the Summer Amidst Scorching Temperatures

SEOUL

As the scorching heat continues, Seoul has issued its first heat wave alert of the summer. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has raised the alert level due to persistently high temperatures and a significant risk of heat-related illnesses. The alert, which now extends to most of the country, highlights the intensity of the ongoing heat wave.

On July 25, 2024, at 10 a.m., Seoul experienced its first heat wave alert of the summer. This alert indicates that the daily maximum perceived temperature is expected to exceed 35°C (95°F) for two or more consecutive days, or that significant damage from prolonged heat is anticipated.

Expanded Heat Alerts

The KMA has also upgraded heat warnings to alerts in various regions, including most of Gyeonggi Province, such as Goyang, Paju, Namyangju, Suwon, and Seongnam; eastern Gangwon Province; Cheonan in Chungcheongnam-do; and several areas in Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do. Additionally, regions in Gyeongsangbuk-do, including Andong and Yeongju, are now under heat wave warnings.

The KMA has issued an urgent broadcast request to media outlets, emphasizing that the perceived temperature is expected to surpass 33°C (91°F) across the majority of the country. This intense heat increases the likelihood of heat-related health issues, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Current Heat Advisory Situation

Of the 183 land-based advisory zones across the country, 176 are currently under heat advisories. Among these, 106 zones are under heat wave alerts, surpassing the 70 zones under heat warnings. Heat warnings are issued when the perceived temperature is expected to reach or exceed 33°C for at least two consecutive days.

Weather Conditions Contributing to the Heat

The extreme heat is a result of the Korean Peninsula being situated at the edge of the North Pacific High. The interaction between this high-pressure system and the third typhoon of the season, Typhoon Kemi, has led to a powerful, humid south wind blowing across the peninsula. This weather pattern has caused both temperatures and humidity levels to rise dramatically, resulting in the current sweltering conditions.

As Seoul and much of South Korea face unprecedented heat levels, the first heat wave alert of the summer underscores the severity of the situation. With the risk of heat-related illnesses increasing, it is crucial for residents to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and avoid excessive heat exposure. The KMA's urgent broadcast request highlights the seriousness of the heat wave and the need for public awareness and safety measures.
