Seoul Records 36.4°C: Heatwave and Tropical Nights Continue

On August 13th, 2024, Seoul recorded a scorching high of 36.4°C

Seoul and the rest of the country are experiencing record-breaking heatwaves and tropical nights. On August 13th, Seoul's temperature soared to 36.4°C, marking the highest temperature this summer. In this post, we will explore the recent heatwave conditions, the potential for breaking tropical night records, and the weather forecast for the coming days.

Seoul Hits the Highest Temperature of the Summer

On August 13th, 2024, Seoul recorded a scorching high of 36.4°C, making it the hottest day of the year so far. This surpasses the previous high of 36.2°C recorded on August 4th, reflecting the extreme heat gripping the city. Not only Seoul, but most regions across the country were under heatwave warnings, with some areas experiencing heat index temperatures approaching 38°C.

For example, the heat index in Mook-ri, Idong-eup, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, climbed to 38.6°C, while Gosam-myeon, Anseong-si, also reached a high of 38.3°C. Other regions, including Hongcheon in Gangwon-do, Gongju in Chungnam, and Damyang in Jeollanam-do, also saw heat index readings above 37°C, highlighting the widespread impact of the heatwave.

Tropical Night Record Set to Be Broken

Seoul has now experienced 23 consecutive tropical nights, bringing the city close to matching the 1994 record of 24 consecutive nights. The current longest streak of tropical nights was set in 2018 at 26 days. According to the mid-term forecast, Seoul's minimum temperatures are expected to remain above 25°C through August 23rd, making it likely that the 2018 record will be broken.

A tropical night occurs when the nighttime temperature remains above 25°C, which can significantly impact comfort and health. This year's extended streak of tropical nights, combined with the extreme daytime heat, is causing considerable discomfort for Seoul residents.

Weather Forecast and Precautions

Currently, there are no typhoons or other disturbances affecting the atmospheric pressure in Korea, meaning that the high humidity, heatwave conditions with a heat index around 35°C, and tropical nights are expected to persist. This indicates that the extreme heat will likely continue nationwide, requiring caution and preparation.

It is advisable to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and take breaks in cooler, indoor environments. Special attention should be given to prevent heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.

Seoul and the entire nation are enduring record-breaking heatwaves and tropical nights this summer. This extreme heat serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by climate change. With the heatwave likely to persist, it is crucial to prioritize personal health and community safety. Let’s ensure we navigate this summer’s record-breaking weather safely by taking the necessary precautions.
