The prices of popular summer foods, Naengmyeon and Samgyetang, have seen significant increases, putting a strain on consumers. In Seoul, the cost of Naengmyeon has risen to 17,000 KRW, and Samgyetang has surpassed 20,000 KRW. This article explores the reasons behind these price hikes and the current situation.
During the summer, many people turn to refreshing dishes like Naengmyeon and Samgyetang to beat the heat. However, this year, the cost of enjoying these dishes has risen significantly, increasing the financial burden on consumers.
In Seoul, the price of Naengmyeon has escalated rapidly in recent years. For example, a well-known Pyongyang Naengmyeon restaurant in Gwanghwamun recently increased its price from 16,000 KRW to 17,000 KRW. Just three years ago, this restaurant charged 14,000 KRW for a bowl of Naengmyeon, meaning the price has surged by 24% in just a short period. The rise in Naengmyeon prices is attributed to factors like increasing labor costs and higher prices for buckwheat and other ingredients.
Samgyetang, another popular dish during the summer, has not been spared from price hikes. In Seoul, the average price for a bowl of Samgyetang has exceeded 17,000 KRW for the first time. At some well-known Samgyetang restaurants, a basic bowl now costs 20,000 KRW. Compared to seven years ago, the price of Samgyetang has increased by about 21%.
According to Korea Consumer Agency’s price information portal, "Chonggyeong," the average cost of dining out for Naengmyeon in Seoul has risen by 24% over the past three years, and the price of Samgyetang has also jumped by 21% over the last seven years. These increases are significant compared to other popular dishes like Kalguksu or Jajangmyeon. Despite being staple summer foods, the steep price hikes for Naengmyeon and Samgyetang are making them less accessible for many consumers.
The rising costs of Naengmyeon and Samgyetang, two of the most popular summer dishes, are creating a significant burden on consumers. While factors such as increased labor costs and ingredient prices are driving these hikes, consumers are feeling the strain. If this trend continues, enjoying these classic summer dishes may become increasingly difficult. It is crucial to explore solutions to mitigate the impact of these rising prices on consumers.
