The End of Record-Breaking Heat and the Arrival of Heavy Rain Nationwide

As September nears its end, the persistent heatwave across South Korea has broken numerous temperature records, with southern regions experiencing scorching temperatures of up to 37.7°C. However, this extreme heat is expected to subside with the arrival of rain and cooler air starting on September 20, bringing an end to the record-breaking late summer heat.

The intense heat that has gripped South Korea throughout mid-September set new temperature records in various regions. For example, Gwangju recorded a high of 35.8°C, the hottest September temperature since meteorological records began in 1939. In Yangsan, the temperature soared to an astonishing 37.7°C. This unusual late-summer heat was caused by a combination of high-pressure systems over Tibet and the North Pacific, which trapped warm and humid air over the Korean Peninsula.

Fortunately, relief is on the way. On September 20, the arrival of rain and cooler air will begin to push out the intense heat. Although morning temperatures will still remain high at 23-27°C, the daytime highs will drop significantly, with most cities expecting temperatures between 26°C and 31°C. Areas like Seoul, Gwangju, and Daegu will see a notable drop in temperatures as rainfall helps bring down the heat.

However, the rain is expected to be heavy, with downpours anticipated across the country. Areas like the capital region, Chungcheong, and parts of Jeolla will experience rainfall of 30-50mm per hour starting in the afternoon of the 20th. The central regions will also face substantial rain, with predictions of up to 250mm in mountainous areas and along the east coast.

In addition to the rain, coastal regions, particularly Jeju and the southern coasts, are expected to experience strong winds and high waves. Winds in some areas may reach speeds of up to 90 km/h, and waves could rise as high as 6 meters. As a result, caution is advised for those near coastal areas, as dangerous conditions may persist through September 21.

While the record-breaking heat that has gripped South Korea is finally coming to an end, the transition into cooler weather brings the risk of heavy rain and stormy conditions. With significant rainfall and potential flooding in some areas, it’s important to prepare for potential weather disruptions. As always, stay informed and take precautions to stay safe as the weather shifts.
