On October 2, 2024, cold air from the northwest caused a significant drop in morning temperatures across central Korea, marking the official start of autumn. In some areas, temperatures fell below 10°C, and strong winds further intensified the chill. This blog post will cover the weather update for the day and offer tips on staying healthy and prepared during this seasonal transition.

If you’ve stepped outside this morning, you likely felt the chill in the air. Cold winds from the northwest have caused a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially in the central regions of Korea. The temperature in Seoul dropped to 12.3°C, while Chuncheon experienced a low of 8.1°C. In some inland areas and the mountainous regions of Gangwon, temperatures fell below 5°C. In fact, frost is even expected in certain parts of Gangwon’s higher elevations.

The strong winds today will make it feel even colder. Across most regions, winds will blow at speeds of up to 15 meters per second, with some mountainous areas experiencing gusts of up to 20 meters per second. With such gusty conditions, it’s essential to bundle up with layers to keep warm, especially if you’re commuting to work this morning.

Daytime highs will range from 19°C to 24°C, slightly cooler than usual. The significant difference between morning and afternoon temperatures can cause fatigue, so make sure to dress in layers and bring a jacket to adjust to the changing conditions. In addition, staying hydrated and getting enough rest will help your body adjust to these sudden weather changes.

Meanwhile, light rain (around 5mm) is expected in the southern parts of Gangwon, the northern coastal areas of Gyeongbuk, as well as Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Those living in these regions should be prepared for cooler, wet conditions as the rain could further lower temperatures. On a positive note, air quality remains good across the country, thanks to smooth atmospheric circulation.

At sea, waves will rise between 0.5 and 3.5 meters in the East and West Seas, and between 0.5 and 2.5 meters in the South Sea. In deeper waters, waves could reach up to 4.0 meters, so those planning marine activities should be cautious.

As temperatures drop and autumn truly begins, it’s important to stay mindful of your health, particularly with the sharp difference between morning and afternoon temperatures. Dressing in layers and staying warm is key. Additionally, take care when traveling in windy conditions, especially in mountainous or coastal areas. Be prepared, stay healthy, and enjoy the crisp start of the autumn season!
