In August 2024, the number of marriages in South Korea increased by 20%, marking the highest growth rate on record. Simultaneously, the number of births also rose by 6%, showing an upward trend for the second consecutive month. Positive perceptions about marriage and childbirth are expanding, particularly among the younger MZ generation, aided by various government support policies. This blog explores the background and outlook of these changes.

South Korea, facing a severe low birthrate crisis, has recently seen an increase in both marriage and birth rates, drawing significant attention. According to the Korean Statistical Information Service, the number of marriages in August 2024 rose by 20% compared to the previous year, with 17,527 marriages recorded. This marks the highest growth rate ever for the month of August.

The number of births also increased for the second consecutive month, with 20,098 babies born in August, a 5.9% rise compared to last year. This uptick indicates the potential for a rebound in birth rates for the first time since 2016. A crucial factor behind this increase is the changing perception of marriage and childbirth among the younger generation.

The MZ generation is increasingly recognizing the necessity of marriage and childbirth, supported by various government initiatives. Policies like special loans for newborns and priority housing supply are positively impacting many young couples. Yoo Hye-mi, the senior presidential secretary for low birthrate response, stated, “The policies implemented by the current government appear to be beneficial.”

Notably, the proportion of young adults expressing a desire to marry has risen, with 65.4% of respondents indicating they intend to marry, according to a survey by the Low Birthrate and Aging Society Commission. Additionally, 48.1% of women aged 25-29 now feel the need for children, reflecting a shift in values among the younger generation that coincides with government support initiatives.

The survey also revealed a significant increase in the desire for children among married couples without children, with 50.7% expressing interest in having kids, up by 8.3 percentage points. This shift in mindset is largely attributed to government support for newlyweds and families with young children. A newly married couple noted that attractive programs such as special housing loans and parental benefits have made marriage seem economically advantageous.

As South Korea’s low birthrate crisis shows signs of improvement, the positive trends in marriage and childbirth are noteworthy. The changing attitudes of the MZ generation, combined with government support, suggest a potential increase in birth rates in the future. However, for this trend to continue, it is crucial to develop long-term and stable policies. As we observe these changes, we hope they will have a positive impact on South Korean society.
